Does a Mother in law attend an out of town baby shower?

Hi,

I was wondering. Recentely my Mom, sisters and I were asked to attend a baby shower for my brothers wife. The baby shower is out of state. We currently we live in the same town as my brother. We were planning on having a baby shower here. Is it rude not to attend the baby shower out of state? What is the proper etiquette for a mother in law?
