Surprise baby shower for second baby

by Laine

(Tampa, FL)

Is it ok for a woman to have a baby shower for her second baby? We would like to throw a surprise shower for a friend that is having another baby and we just want to make sure that it would be appropriate. Our friend is a little short on money and we don’t want to upset her or offend her. We also don’t want to ignore this new baby’s arrival. The first baby was a boy and the one on the way is a girl. Any advice on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated.

Baby sprinkle

by: Sonya

Hi Laine,

People use to frown upon having a baby shower for any child after the first born. But today, it is imperative to have a party for each child. Why? Because all babies need to be celebrated, and all new babies need stuff.

You want to have what is called a “baby sprinkle”. This is a toned-down version of a baby shower. The idea is to sprinkle the new baby and mom with gifts instead of showering them with stuff. The parents probably do not need all the big stuff they got for the first baby-stuff like nursery furniture, carseat, stroller, etc. So ask your guests to donate just diapers, wipes, bathtime and feeding items. These are things that will have to be bought again for each child.

A baby sprinkle does not cost much to put together either. You still want to decorate and have food for the guests. But remember that this does not have to be as extravagant as a full blown baby shower.

So definitely go ahead and have the party for your friend. As you said, you do not want to ignore this baby’s arrival!
