Should I have a baby shower?

by Sarah R.

(Asheboro, NC)

I am 30 weeks pregnant with a baby that has a congenital heart defect. We have been told that our baby may not survive, either in utero or after birth. Our friends and family know about our situation.
I am not sure if it would be appropriate to have a baby shower. I don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, and I also wouldn’t know how to handle returning the gifts to everyone if necessary.
I want to celebrate our new baby regardless, I just want to know if a “baby shower” is the right way to do this. Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks~

Have a baby “celebration” instead of a shower

by: Sonya

Sarah, it sounds like you have the right idea here. I am so glad to hear that you are thinking positively about your situation.

Have you thought about just having a New Baby Celebration, without all the traditional baby shower stuff. You can tell your guests on the invitation that you would prefer their company to help you celebrate rather than a gift.

You could also just celebrate with your immediate family for now, and just send out baby announcements to everyone.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish and your family all the best.
