Asking guests to bring food

I'm a first time hostess for a baby shower and wanted to get some advise on the proper (and most polite) way to ask guests to bring food to the shower.

I've seen this also done at bridal showers where when you ask each person to bring a dish, also ask them to bring the recipe for the dish on an index card. The hostess then provides a book or recipe box for the guest of honor to put them all together. Everyone loves having a collection of yummy recipes at hand.

Have a potluck baby shower NEW

Hi, my suggestion would be to have a potluck baby shower. State on the invitation that you would like each guest to bring a dish of their choice, and make sure you ask them to tell you what they're bringing, just so you'll have a heads up on things.
You can even make a little game out of this. Whichever dish the mom-to-be likes best, give whoever bought that gift a special party favor.
